Your boiler helps you and your family stay warm in the cold winters of Chicago, IL. While some sounds are normal during operation, other noises may mean a problem. If you notice any of the following sounds, make sure to call our professionals to come check it out.
Banging
If your boiler makes a banging sound when it first starts up, it could mean a problem with the pilot light. When there isn’t enough gas or surrounding air, it can cause a banging noise while trying to start.
If the banging persists after starting, it could be kettling, which refers to the system’s heat exchanger overheating. A buildup of limescale on the heat exchanger, poor water flow, a bad thermostat, or excessively high temperatures can cause this.
Clicking
Clicking or ticking noises can also mean problems with the ignition process. Normal expansion within the pipes due to temperature can also cause these sounds, but if they persist, it may signify an issue.
Gurgling
Gurgling can happen because of low water pressure or trapped air. This could potentially mean there’s a leak within the system, which can impact its efficiency and even sometimes cause damage to your home.
Humming
If your system starts to hum or vibrate, it may indicate loose parts or a problem with the circulator pump. The circulating pump connects the boiler with your radiators. If the speed is too low, it can cause humming whereas loose parts (which you can prevent with maintenance) will rattle against each other and cause a vibrating sound.
Whistling
Whistling and whining sounds can mean the system pressure is too high. This can be from a blockage or a malfunctioning pressure relief valve. Whining or buzzing can also indicate worn-out pump bearings.
