Ductless mini-split systems may be more efficient and longer-lasting than other kinds of heating and cooling systems, but they may still experience issues that need repair. For example, you might notice a water leak at some point. Here are some reasons the ductless HVAC system in your Chicago, IL home might be leaking water.
1. A Clogged Drain Line
The most common cause of a leaking ductless system is a clogged drain line. A ductless system draws moisture from the surrounding air and transports it outside the home via the drain line. If the line becomes clogged, the water has nowhere to go but into your home, hence the leak.
2. A Damaged Drain Pan
The drain pan catches moisture from your indoor unit so that it can then drain via the drain line out of your home. If the drain pain has damage, any water inside of it will leak into your home. A professional should regularly inspect and repair the drain pan and drain line as needed during routine HVAC maintenance.
3. A Dirty Air Filter
A dirty air filter can cause all kinds of problems with a ductless mini-split system, including water leaks. When an air filter becomes too dirty, it can cause dirt and dust to build up on the coils of the indoor unit, obstructing airflow and causing the coils to freeze. When the coils thaw, any ice that has built up on them melts and drips onto your floor.
As with any HVAC system, clean the air filters in your ductless system regularly. Check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure how to do this.
